FOOD FOR FAMILIES

What is the Food For Families Program?

Food for Families is The Village Cooperative’s community food-access program that grows and distributes fresh, locally produced food to families experiencing food insecurity. Through our network of urban farms, community gardens, and neighborhood growing spaces, we provide nutritious produce directly to households while building a more resilient, community-based local food system.

We’ve fed over 400,000 people

For the past 6 years the Village CO-OP’s Food For Families Program was funded buy federal grants.

After DOGE cut funding to the EPA securing funding has been harder.

A small group of regenerative urban farms feeding the people who need it most.

The Food For Families program delivers:

140 veggie bags per week

1 veggie bag feeds 4 people

That’s 560 people every week for 22-28 weeks

That’s approx. 12-15,00 people every year

‍ ‍Veggies bags typically include: spinach, kale, cabbage, lettuces, squash, zucchini, cucumbers, tomatoes, carrots, beets, onions, turnips, radishes, eggplants, corn, bell peppers, jalapeños, and other seasonally available veggies grown right here in Salt Lake City.

What is The Village Cooperative?

The Village Cooperative has established urban micro farms in these underrepresented communities with our partner farmers and volunteer families who host satellite micro farms. Our primary populations served in the Food For Families program includes migrant families, single mothers, and those experiencing poverty.

We deliver veggie boxes weekly. Each box feeds a family of approximately four to six for a week. These veggie boxes include assorted greens, root vegetables, corn, squash, tomatoes, peppers, and other organically grown veggies. We give food to those who qualify for our program, to our volunteers, to our staff, and to our families and friends because we believe that

FOOD IS CULTURE

and communities built around food production are stronger, more resilient, and able to survive the perturbations of our modern food system.
